    Is the Air Conditioning on?

    Post by Room7 on 10/6/2011, 2:22 am

Ive noticed the air coming out is really cold even when the air outside is 80-100degrees however the AC light isnt lit. I have the Auto button pressed and just adjust the temperature setting. Is the A/C on or off? I ask mainly because of fuel efficiency reasons.

By the way I live in Socal....Ill take a picture the next time i notice it, right now its dreadful and cold and rainy.

That's an odd quirk about the climate controls on this car. If you are in auto, it will do whatever it needs to do to get that temp. That includes turning on the compressor to cool the air or defog the windshield, changing which vents are used, inside/outside air, fan speed, etc...

The only time the AC will light up is if you have manually engaged it by pressing the button. I've even noticed that when I turn off auto and set the controls manually, the AC can still come on if needed to reach that temp, it just no longer adjusts vents and fan to get there.

If you want to make sure the AC is off, press the button once (light comes on) and press it again (light goes off). At this point it's guaranteed OFF until you either engage it or hit Auto.

It's quirky but once you get the hang of it it's no big deal.

Check in your owner's manual in the AC chapter (I think). There's a defog program that takes control of AC. You can deactivate that fonction if you want.

Fastlerner, thanks. I just tried what you said and that is exactly what happened. I am going to see if it can be turned off. Thanks again.

According to the manual, cancelling the "defog logic" only affects whether or not the system automatically chooses the air intake (fresh or recirculate) when you press the windshield defog button.

When you press the Defrost button. The AC automatically turns on and pumps the fan to level 3.

The main thing to realize is that with all the automation in the climate controls the AC will come on whenever the car determines it's needed, but in most cases doesn't light the dash light.

Just think of the dash light being on as an indicator that the AC is manually engaged. Pressing it a second time will turn it off and the car won't engage it again until you change it's mode (auto or defrost) even if you lower the temp.

So when it's cool enough that I just want straight outside air "as is", I'll put it on fresh then hit the AC button twice to make sure the compressor is off and crank the temp down so it's not heating (or cooling) the air at all. Crack the sunroof and you get a nice flow of fresh filtered outside air.

I was wondering about this too. They should do some kind of recall for this. I have never seen such a thing, at least have the light come on the ac when it's on.

    That's not going to happen.

Why do you want to know when the A/C compressor is engaged?

For me AC uses fuel of course. A lot of times I can cool the car down with ambient air with just the fan running.
